How To Alter The Rise Lengths On Your Maud Trousers

FITTING TROUSERS MAUD.jpg

We designed the Maud trousers to sit on or just below the natural waist. Below we describe how to lengthen or shorten the rise lengths in only a few simple steps.

To begin, check the through rise measurement on our Maud pattern spec (found in our instruction booklet) against your own through rise measurement. Start at your belly button and follow the tape measure under your crotch to your natural waist at the back. Maud is designed to sit a little dropped at the crotch so make sure you leave a little ease at the crotch to compensate for this.

Work out the difference from your own rise against the pattern and apply the basic pattern amendments below.

Back Leg

To lengthen the rise, cut across the lengthen/shorten slash line.

Back leg: cut across lengthen/shorten line

Place a piece of paper underneath your pattern pieces. Tape the top piece in place and draw a straight line down from the rise. Spread the lower trouser piece down by how much you want to increase your rise then tape in place. Blend your side seam by drawing a gentle curve to join the 2 pieces back together

To shorten the rise length, cut through the slash line in the same way.  Overlap the pieces by the amount you want to reduce. Tape in place and blend your side and rise seam

Front Leg

Follow the same method for the front leg -  making sure to add or remove the same length to the front as you did to the back so that your side seams match

To correct the side seam: place the top pocket bag on top of the adjusted front trouser panel. Matching the top of the pocket opening to the waist and the lower pocket opening to the side seam

Trace over to re-draw your pocket opening, side seam and notches

Trim following your drawn line. Double-check your side seams and pocket notches match, by laying them on top!

Trousers are one of the trickiest garments to get right on your body so it’s always worth making a toile or muslin before you cut your cloth. Any questions as you sew please get in touch.
